Lyceum Physical Medicine is proud to offer groundbreaking stem cell and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapies to our patients. Advances in this field are happening every day, showing new, amazing uses for this treatment: from a “skin gun” that can help burn patients re-grow skin without scarring or painful transplant surgeries to treating meniscus tears and herniated discs in athletes. And now a new study has provided insights on the positive effects of stem cell therapy on older individuals’ immune systems and overall health.
Treating Frailty with Stem Cell Therapy
The study, conducted by the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (ISCI), tracked 30 patients above the age of 60 over the course of a year. The results showed that participants had improved functional capacity, quality of life, and pulmonary and immunologic function.
The first of its kind, the study was specifically targeted toward treating frailty in older individuals. We often think of “frailty” as a mere adjective, but in the medical field, frailty is a syndrome that encompasses the general decline of health due to the aging process. This decline can lead to weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slowness or decreased physical activity. It also indicates an increased risk of poor health outcomes.
According to Dr. Joshua Hare, the founding director of ISCI and leader of the study, “As the population ages, it is vital that we find new therapies to allow for better quality of life and functional capacity.” The results of their research show that stem cell therapy is a viable way to improve the internal health and overall quality of life in older individuals. What beneficial uses for stem cell therapy will be discovered next?
